Base64 Encoder & Decoder
Change text to Base64 and back again.
Your input is processed in your browser.
Private by design
Your data is processed directly in your browser. It is not sent to Stay Local Tools servers for processing. Because the work happens on your device, nothing you type here leaves your browser unless you choose to copy or share it yourself.
Note: the website itself still loads normal web files, and may use analytics or ads later. The promise here is about the files and text you put into these tools.
How to Use
- Choose Encode or Decode.
- Enter your text.
- Copy the result.
What is Base64?
Base64 is a way to represent any data — text, images, or any file — using only 64 plain text characters: A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /. It is often used to safely include binary-like data inside text-only places, such as an email, a URL, or a JSON value.
Base64 is not encryption
Encoding is not the same as encrypting. Base64 has no password or key — anyone can decode it back to the original data instantly, with no secret required. It is meant to make data safe to transport as text, not to keep it private.
Why encoded text becomes longer
Base64 converts every 3 bytes of the original data into 4 text characters. That means encoded text is always roughly 33% longer than the original — a predictable, expected side effect of representing data this way, not a sign of a problem.
Questions and Answers
No. Base64 is not encryption or a secret code — it is a way to represent any data as plain text using only letters, numbers, + and /. Anyone can decode Base64 back to the original text with no password. Never use it to keep data secret.
Yes, this tool encodes and decodes Unicode text correctly, including Korean, Japanese, emoji and other non-English characters. Text is converted to its UTF-8 bytes before encoding, which is the standard, safe way to Base64-encode text.
No. Encoding and decoding both happen directly in your browser using standard Web APIs. Nothing is sent to Stay Local Tools servers.
Base64 turns every 3 bytes of the original data into 4 text characters, so encoded text is always about a third longer than the original.
