Unix Timestamp
Private by design
Your data is processed directly in your browser. It is not sent to Stay Local Tools servers for processing. Because the work happens on your device, nothing you type here leaves your browser unless you choose to copy or share it yourself.
Note: the website itself still loads normal web files, and may use analytics or ads later. The promise here is about the files and text you put into these tools.
How to Use
- To convert a timestamp to a date: enter the Unix timestamp, or press Use Current Time.
- To convert a date to a timestamp: switch to Date to Timestamp and pick a date and time.
- Local Time, UTC, ISO 8601 and Unix values all update together.
- Copy any result you need.
Unix seconds vs milliseconds
The classic Unix timestamp counts whole seconds since 1 January 1970 UTC. Many modern systems, including JavaScript's own Date object, use milliseconds instead for extra precision — that is simply the seconds value multiplied by 1000. A 10-digit number is almost always seconds; a 13-digit number is almost always milliseconds.
UTC vs local time
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is a single, fixed reference time used worldwide — it does not change with daylight saving or location. Local Time shows the same moment converted into your own device's time zone setting, which is far more useful for reading, but will look different for someone in another part of the world viewing the same timestamp.
ISO 8601
ISO 8601 is an international standard for writing dates and times as text, in the form YYYY-MM-DDTHH:mm:ss.sssZ. It sorts correctly as plain text, is unambiguous across countries, and is understood by almost every programming language, which makes it a common choice for storing dates in files and databases.
Questions and Answers
A Unix timestamp counts the number of seconds (or milliseconds) that have passed since 1 January 1970, 00:00:00 UTC — a fixed starting point called "the Unix epoch". It is a simple way for computers to store a moment in time as a single number.
A 10-digit number is usually Unix seconds; a 13-digit number is usually Unix milliseconds (seconds × 1000). This tool guesses which one you mean based on the number of digits, but you can also choose seconds or milliseconds yourself.
Local Time uses your own browser's time zone setting — it is read from your device, never guessed from your location. UTC is shown separately as a fixed reference point that does not depend on any time zone.
