This tool detects every language track in the file and lets you choose which one to convert. Tracks are never merged together automatically.

Why does my SMI file look encoded wrong?

Some older Korean SMI files use the CP949/EUC-KR encoding instead of UTF-8. Try the CP949 / EUC-KR option in the Encoding setting, or leave it on Auto and this tool will try to detect it for you.

Will the converted file keep my line breaks and basic formatting?

Yes, line breaks are kept. You can also choose to remove HTML formatting, and choose whether basic italic tags are kept or removed.

How to Use

What are SMI and SRT?

SMI (SAMI) is an older subtitle format that stores text using HTML-like tags such as<SYNC> and <P>. It was common with Korean media players. SRT is a simpler, widely supported format used by most modern video players and websites.

Why conversion can be imperfect

SMI files are written by many different programs, and real files are often not perfectly formed. This tool reads SMI in a tolerant way and does its best with common patterns, but unusual or badly broken files may not convert perfectly. Basic formatting, line breaks and multiple language tracks are supported; complex styling is not.

A note on encoding

Older Korean SMI files are sometimes saved in CP949/EUC-KR instead of UTF-8. This tool tries UTF-8 first and falls back to CP949/EUC-KR automatically, with a manual override in case the guess is wrong. Detection is a best effort, not a guarantee.
