Files stay on your device
Private by design
Your files are processed directly in your browser. They are not uploaded to Stay Local Tools servers for processing. Because the work happens on your device, your files stay with you unless you download or share them yourself.
Note: the website itself still loads normal web files, and may use analytics or ads later. The promise here is about the files and text you put into these tools.
How to Use
- Press Choose Files and select one or more JPG images. You can also drag and drop them onto the box.
- Move the Quality slider if you want a smaller file or a better picture. 80 is a good starting point.
- Press Convert to WebP. Your browser does the work, so nothing is sent to a server.
- Check the new size and how much space you saved for each image.
- Press Download for one image, or Download All to get every image at once.
What is WebP?
WebP is an image format made for the web. It stores the same picture as a JPG or PNG file, but usually in fewer bytes. Google released it in 2010, and today every current browser can show WebP images.
WebP can save an image in two ways. Lossy mode removes small details that are hard to see, like JPG does, and gives the smallest files. Lossless mode keeps every pixel, like PNG does. This tool uses lossy mode, which suits photos best.
Why convert JPG to WebP?
Smaller images make a page load faster. That matters most on phones and on slow networks, and page speed is part of how search engines rank a site. For a typical photo, WebP at quality 80 is often 25% to 35% smaller than the same photo as a JPG, and the difference is hard to see.
Smaller files also cost less to store and to send. If you keep many photos on a website, in a blog or in an app, the saving adds up quickly.
JPG vs WebP
| Point | JPG | WebP |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Larger | Usually 25–35% smaller |
| Transparency | No | Yes |
| Animation | No | Yes |
| Old software support | Works almost everywhere | Some old programs cannot open it |
| Best use | Sharing and printing | Websites and apps |
Which quality should you choose?
The quality slider decides how much detail the converter may remove. A higher number keeps more detail and makes a bigger file.
- 90–100: almost no visible loss. Use this for photos you will edit again or print.
- 75–89: a good balance. Most website images look the same at 80 and the file is much smaller.
- 50–74: smaller files with some soft edges. Fine for thumbnails and background pictures.
- Below 50: clearly visible loss. Use only when the file must be very small.
Converting a JPG to WebP is not a way to get quality back. The JPG was already compressed, so the WebP copies what is left. Start from the best original you have.
When WebP is a good choice
Use WebP for images on your own website or app, where you control which browsers need to open the file. Modern browsers all support it, and many website builders accept it.
Keep JPG when you send a photo to someone else, when a printer or an older program must open it, or when a service you use does not accept WebP. Converting is quick, so it is safe to keep the JPG original and make WebP copies for the web.
Why converting on your own device helps
Most online converters ask you to upload your photo first. The file then sits on a server you do not control, and photos often contain more than a picture: a date, a camera model, and sometimes the exact place where the photo was taken.
This page works differently. Your browser reads the file, draws it, and writes the WebP copy on your device. The photo is never sent to a conversion service to become a WebP file, so there is no upload to wait for, and the file stays with you.
Questions and Answers
No. This converter runs inside your browser. Your JPG files are read from your device, converted on your device, and saved only when you press Download.
You can choose many files at once. The practical limit is your device memory, because every image must fit in your browser while it is converted. If you work with very large photos, convert them in smaller groups.
At quality 80 most photos look the same as the JPG but the file is much smaller. Lower quality gives smaller files and more visible loss. If you need the best possible picture, use quality 90 to 100.
A JPG that was already saved with strong compression has little left to remove. Converting it at a high quality setting can produce a larger file. Lower the quality, or keep the original JPG.
No. The image is redrawn from its pixels, so camera settings, date and GPS location are not copied into the WebP file. This is useful for privacy, but keep your original file if you need that information.
All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera show WebP images, and Windows and macOS open them as well. Some older programs and older phones do not. Keep a JPG copy if you must support very old software.
