Convert, compress or resize?
These solve different problems, even though they all end with a smaller image file:
- Same picture, different file format? Use JPG to WebP, WebP to JPG or PNG to WebP.
- Same format and dimensions, smaller file size? Use Image Compressor and adjust the quality slider.
- Need different pixel dimensions? Use Image Resizer. Resizing changes width and height; it doesn't by itself control file size the way the quality slider does.
Why convert to or from WebP
WebP files are usually noticeably smaller than an equivalent JPG or PNG at similar visual quality, which is why converting to it is worth doing for web use. The tradeoff is compatibility — some older programs and devices still expect JPG or PNG, which is when converting back with WebP to JPG is useful. Compression itself works differently by format: JPG quality is adjustable and lossy, while PNG is always lossless, so the quality slider has no effect on a PNG's visual result, only on how the tools re-encode it.
Hidden data in photos
A photo file can carry more than the picture — camera settings, the date taken, and sometimes the exact GPS location it was taken at. This is invisible in a normal photo viewer. EXIF Viewer & Remover shows you what's stored and lets you save a copy with it removed, which is worth doing before posting a photo somewhere public.
